Italian Pepper Biscuits

Pepper Biscuits

This recipe comes from John’s Aunt Rose, who got it from his Italian grandmother, affectionately referred to as “Small Nonnan.”  John loves these biscuits so much I caught him making them himself (once).

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tbsp freshly ground pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 cup oil
  • 1 cup water

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  In separate bowls mix dry ingredients together and wet ingredients together.  Add  liquids into the dry mixture, stirring well with a spoon.  Use your hands to further mix the ingredients and form the entire mixture into a large ball.  Do not overmix.  Spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray.

Take a chunk of dough the equivalent of a 2” ball and shape/roll it into a log approximately 6 inches long and the width of your middle finger.  Shape like the pink and yellow ribbons used to show support for those with breast cancer and the troops (see photo).  Put biscuit on baking sheet.  Repeat.

Bake 25-30 minutes.  Makes about one dozen biscuits.
